WHAT WILL THE FUNERAL DIRECTOR DO

Duckett Funerals are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We provide personal, professional advice and assistance with all funeral arrangements, according to instructions received.

A funeral service is a highly personal tribute to a person’s life and the choices as to the type of service, music, readings etc. give the family an opportunity to provide a fitting memorial. We will be able to advise on options for the different types of ceremony (religious or non-religious), the location of the service, officiants, and the format of the service.

OUR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES MAKE AVAILABLE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Making all necessary funeral service arrangements

  • Making all necessary administrative arrangements

  • Registration of death, including preparing and sending all necessary documents to registrars.

FUNERAL DETAILS EXPLAINED

It is important that you choose the funeral service that is right for you and your family. There are many choices to make and we are always flexible in our arrangements.

DEATH CERTIFICATES

Duckett Funerals will apply to the Registrar for a death certificate at the time of the death registration. The death certificate is normally completed by the Registrar in less than 10 working days and will be forwarded to the nominated personal named on the application (usually your solicitor or a family member)

JEWELLERY AND CLOTHING

Arrangements will need to be made for clothing and jewellery for the deceased. If you request the jewellery back, please ensure it is listed and accounted for prior to the service.

EMBALMING

We have fully Qualified embalmers to ensure hygienic preservation and natural presentation. Embalming has become customary in New Zealand.

CASKET

We have a wide range caskets available for you to make a selection appropriate to your tastes and budget.

FLOWERS

We can arrange family tributes. Floral tributes can be left on the casket after the funeral, taken back the home, sent to the hospital or rest home, or delivered elsewhere if required.

DONATIONS

When there has been a request for donations in lieu of flowers, donation box is supplied at the service and all donations received are forwarded to the named organisation by Duckett Funerals.

NEWSPAPER NOTICES

We will place death and bereavement notices in any paper, in New Zealand, and/or overseas.

ASHES

Ashes may be scattered at the crematorium, at a cemetery, interred in a family or new plot, scattered at sea or anywhere deemed appropriate, or held at home. We also have a selection of urns available.

REGISTRATION OF DEATH/DEATH CERTIFICATE

It is normal for Duckett Funerals to register the death and at the same time apply for a death certificate. This certificate will be forwarded to the address agreed upon with the funeral director making the arrangements.

VIEWING

Many people find that spending some time with the deceased before the funeral service helps to provide an acceptance of the death and assists with the grieving process. This can also be true for children.

It is your choice weather you wish Duckett Funerals to bring the casket home. Increasingly, people are opting for viewing at home as it enables easier access. However, the more traditional viewing option at a funeral home remains popular, and you may wish the viewing to be at our premises.

If viewing at our premises please give us plenty of notice, especially for viewing after the hours so we can ensure our rooms are open.

THE FUNERAL SERVICE

Members of the family

When members of the family arrive at the church or venue of the funeral service, they will be met by the funeral director or clergy. A private room is available for privacy of family members prior to the service at our funeral home.

Service Personnel

The national flag may be draped on the casket and the last post played at the service. If you wish we will contact the RSA (for former servicemen and women) or the armed forces (for men and women still in service) and arrange their involvement.

Memorial Book, Photography, Audio or Video Recordings and PowerPoint

A memorial book, to record the names of those present at the funeral service can be made available. Photography, audio and/or video recordings and PowerPoint presentations can also be arranged.

Service/Hymn Sheets

If required, chosen hymns and readings can be printed on a Service/Hymn Sheet, which will be given to people attending the funeral. With the option of a photograph of the deceased on the cover, these Service/Hymn Sheets are also a lasting memorial. Please give at least 24 hours’ notice if you require this service.

Refreshments Following Funeral

You may wish to invite family and friends home after the service. Wherever the venue, we will be able to help you with your catering needs, if required.

Monumental Plaques & Headstones

The choice of a memorial stone is usually made after the funeral. All types of monumental work can be arranged, and we will be able to advise you about monumental options, now or in the future.

Assistance and Advice

If you need any advice or assistance with government welfare & ACC claims, War Pension or Superannuation payments, please ask your funeral director.

Dealing with Grief

Duckett Funeral Directors have a Bereavement Support specialist available to all members of your family. Please phone to make an appointment should you wish to meet with her.

Pall Bearers

If pall bearers are required to carry the casket at the funeral service and at the place of committal, four or six people will be needed. This duty can be preformed by the family or by friends, or people from organisations to which the deceased belonged. Invitations to pall bearers are made by the family. The casket is usually in place at the Funeral venue not less than half an hour before the service unless specified by the family. You may wish to carry the casket in at the beginning of the service. Please advise your funeral director if this is the case.

Accounts

An account will be sent to you approximately seven days after the funeral. A discount may be offered if paid by the due date. Funeral costs can vary quite considerably, depending on the family requirements. In most cases families set the price of a funeral by the choices they make. We can advise and suggest alternatives for families where cost is a concern.

The person making the funeral arrangements usually has the ultimate responsibility for the debt. If payment of the account is likely to cause problems, then the matter should be raised with the funeral director at the earliest opportunity. We will be able to offer advise on the type of assistance that may be available from outside agencies.
